The Plaça Major was built in the 15th century and its ground plan is of Renaissance style. The middle of this main square features Olot’s coat of arms and references to the Farándula olotina [Olot’s folkloric effigies], a piece by the Olot artist Quim Domene. The place of Olot was mentioned for the first time in history in 872 in a precept granted by Charles the Bald, King of the Franks, to the monastery of Sant Aniol d’Aguja, which made provision for the use of a vast territory, including a large swathe of what is Alta Garrotxa today.
